What's your favourite jazz song / artist?

March 10th, 2010 by , under nnmj.com.

  • I love jazz, but I don't know too much about it. What are some good songs and artists?

  • Kenny G. - "Songbird"

(* waiting for a SLEW of thumbs downs!!! *)

  • Songs: Stolen Moments - Oliver Nelson, Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock, Footprints - Wayne Shorter, In Walked Bud - Art Blakey, April In Paris - Count Basie. Artist: Miss Billie Holiday.

  • Here are some recommended jazz albums:

    Count Basie: Atomic Swing
    http://www.amazon.com/Atomic-Swing-Count...
This is the Basie Band swinging at its best. Contains lots of classic tracks in the way only the Basie Band could play them.

    Louis Armstrong: On the Road
    http://www.amazon.com/Road-Louis-Armstro...
There would be no Jazz without Louis Armstrong. This live album captures him in all his musical genius and tender humanity. Bring your red beans and rice.

    John Coltrane: Giant Steps
    http://www.amazon.com/Giant-Steps-John-C...
This is one of many great Coltrane albums, and each tune on this one became standard jazz repertoire. Essential Coltrane.

    Charlie Parker: Yardbird Suite:
    http://www.amazon.com/Yardbird-Suite-Ult...
he greatest alto saxophonist in jazz history, this 2 disc set offers most of his famous recordings.

Duke Ellington: Ellington at Newport 1956
    http://www.amazon.com/Ellington-At-Newpo...
This album captures the Ellington Band live and in concert at the Newport Jazz Festival. An apt portrayal of one of the greatest bands ever.

    Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um:
    http://www.amazon.com/Mingus-Ah-Um-Charl...
This album represents all that is Mingus. Everything from screaming the blues to hard bebop is contained within. This is probably Mingus' most famous record.

Oscar Peterson: The Legendary Oscar Peterson Live at the Blue Note:
    http://www.amazon.com/Legendary-Oscar-Pe...
The greatest jazz pianist since Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson is especially in form on this recording. If you can find the 4 disc set at the Blue Note, get that one instead. It is Telarc CD-83617.

    Dave Brubeck: Time Out:
    http://www.amazon.com/Time-Out-Dave-Brub...
Easily Dave Brubeck's most famous album, this represents a foray into different time signatures in jazz. An essential album by one of the most inventive quartets in jazz.

Herbie Hancock: Ken Burns Jazz Collection: Herbie Hancock
    http://www.amazon.com/Ken-Burns-JAZZ-Col...
Another very inventive artist, Herbie Hancock has played with everyone from Miles Davis to Sting. This album gives a taste of all his music from the 60's to the 90's.

    Brown, Clifford: Study in Brown:
    http://www.amazon.com/Study-Brown-Cliffo...
Unlike most all of his counterparts, Clifford Brown didn't do drugs and led a clean life. Unfortunately he still died young in a freak car accident at the age of only 25. Regardless of his early death, his mark on trumpet players and all of jazz is permanent. Study in Brown is a perfect example of his clean cut approach and killin' ideas. Great, upbeat album.

    Dexter Gordon: Go!:
    http://www.amazon.com/Go-Dexter-Gordon/d...
Dexter Gordon was one slick bastard. His fat, sexy tone and the way he played ballads was unmatched by anyone. But he wasn't a one trick pony. "GO" has the perfect balance of fast and slow tunes and is essential to anyone's collection.

Miles Davis: Someday My Prince Will Come:
    http://www.amazon.com/Someday-My-Prince-...
Someday My Prince Will Come" is a great example of Miles' lyrical approach to trumpet. Coltrane had left Miles' band by then, but he still sits in on a few tracks and provides a perfect foil for Miles' new sax player, Hank Mobley.

    Hank Mobley: Soul Station:
    http://www.amazon.com/Soul-Station-Hank-...
Hank Mobley is one of the lesser known tenor saxophone players of the bop era because besides this one album, his work wasn't nearly as profound as say John Coltrane or Dexter Gordon. But Soul Station is a perfect example of layed back, down to earth Jazz that anyone can appreciate.

    Miles Davis: Milestones:
    http://www.amazon.com/Milestones-Miles-D...
Miles Davis wasn't known for his speed on the trumpet, but Milestones definitely proves any doubters wrong. With the help of both Cannonball Adderley and Coltrane on sax and the chops of Philly Joe Jones on drums, Miles tears these songs to pieces. This upbeat album is easy to listen to and one of Miles' best for sure. In a word, Milestones is burnin

Art Blakey: A Night at Birdland, Vol. 2
    http://www.amazon.com/Night-Birdland-Vol...
Art Blakey's wasn't nearly as famous for his drumming as he was for his killer bands and live shows. At this date in 1954 with young gun Clifford Brown and bluesy Lou Donaldson on alto sax, they wipe the floor.

    Cannonball Adderley: Somethin' Else
    http://www.amazon.com/Somethin-Else-Cann...
The title says it all. Cannonball Adderley's sax playing was truly somethin' else. While sax players like Coltrane played with a serious and focused tone, Cannonball always had a round and jovial sound. This album in collaboration with Miles is one of the most famous in jazz and has become standardized repertoire.

    Miles Davis Quintet: Relaxin'
    http://www.amazon.com/Relaxin-Miles-Davi...
The famous Miles Davis Quintet in the 1950s which consisted of Miles, Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones was so renowned that it simply became known as "The Quintet." Among their five or so records together, Relaxin' is arguably the best.
