Steps to being an airline pilot after high school?

March 11th, 2010 by , under nnmj.com.

  • i just graduated and im 18. if i go to flight school and get my private pilots license, what the next step and how many hours do i need. how much money am i going to need to get through all the schooling

  • The amount of money you'll need to get through schooling depends very much on how quickly you learn. Airplane rental costs are at LEAST $80/hour these days (for a decent airplane) + another $40 or so for the instructor. If you're having difficulty with something and need a few extra hours in the airplane you're talking $120 for each additional hour. I would conservatively estimate that you'll need about $50K (more if you'll be doing this away from home and need housing). I did my training at Pan Am Int'l Flight Academy in Phoenix and I'd say it was a pretty good school. The airplanes were in good shape and they're in the business of training airline pilots. Their airplanes are more expensive (about $110 - $140/hour for single engine and about $250 for the multi). At those prices you're going to run up quite a tab (especially when you get to the point where you're getting your 100 hours of multi time - you're sharing the cost with another pilot but you're still looking at $12.5K for this alone).

Anything you can do on your own will save your money. I recommend these steps.

    1. Buy Rod Machado's private pilot handbook. It's the best book out there for new pilots. Read it cover to cover before starting ground school.
    2. Buy the Sporty's private pilot DVD course and watch the entire thing AT LEAST two times before starting your training. (Before I started my instrument training I watched their Instrument course 6 TIMES. It was worth it's weight in gold. It made the formal training SO much easier). http://www.sportys.com/dvdcourses/.
    3. Before starting your instrument training do the same thing with Sporty's Instrument DVD course. Doing this will save you money in your training. You can either learn it on your own or you can pay someone $40/hour to spoon feed it to you.

When you're done with your training unless we have a drastic turn-around in the airline industry you're going to have to flight instruct for a year or more to build time. Plan on making about $15,000 per year.

When you get to your first regional job, plan on making about $20,000 per year. It's reasonable to plan on upgrading to captain within 3 years at which point you'll be making about $45K.

After a couple years as captain at a regional you can move onto the majors if that's your plan. You'll have to start over at the bottom as a new first officer making around $35K/year your first year. The upgrade time at most majors is considerably longer than at the regionals. If you upgrade to captain within 5 years consider yourself very fortunate. At this point you'll be making $100K/year but it will have taken you about 12 years to reach this point.

Unless your'e extremely fortunate you can expect to be furloughed (laid off) sometime (maybe several times) during this period. Just go around any airport and ask the airline pilots if they've ever been laid off. You'll find that most of them have been at one point or another.

The job is great but the industry itself can be very cruel. Only you can decide if it's worth it.
