How does atmospheric pressure change with height in the atmosphere?why does it change?

Air has weight. The weight or force exerted by the air on unit area of a surface is termed as pressure. The pressure of the atmosphere at any level is thus defined as the weight of the overlying column of air over unit area at that level. As you go up the length of this air column becomes less and hence the weight of the air column also becomes less.So the pressure also becomes less. Thus the atmospheric pressure decreases with height.
