My guinea pigs and hamster love iceberg lettuce.Everything I read says they can't have it.If they hear the bag they squeak and chomp it down when I give it to them.Why do they love it if they can't have it?What is bad about it?Iceberg lettuce is the only thing they'll eat besides carrots.They all are healthy and happy so I will keep feeding them the lettuce.Iceburg lettuce has no vitamins, no value except for fiber and water... and nearly no calories. They can eat it, but they'll get diarrhea if they eat too much, and if that's their diet they'll starve to death.
The carrots help, but neither one really has any vitamin "C" so your guinea pigs are in danger of getting scurvy , if that's all they eat.
Guinea pigs need Guinea pig chow...with vitamin c added. You can give them many treats besides lettuce (dark colors much better) and carrots.
How about some grass? Milkweed? Dandylions? Mustard , broccoli, beet , celery or kale leaves?
Potato raw with the eyes removed , and any greenness cut away is great too.
They like the leaves of mulberry trees, rose hips and petals, and mallow leaves.
I have about 40 of them :)Try feeding them spinach instead. You can feed maybe a little leaf but too much will give them diarrhea
*Once a week is fine!I give my hamsters a little bit once in awhile. It isn't the best for them, but a little bit shouldn't hurt. I bet they would love some other veggies! Try broccoli and cauliflower. My guinea pigs always loved those. Apples too! I'm not sure why it is bad though. Maybe because iceberg lettuce is really not any calories and if they fill up on it they don't eat normally so they don't get the calories they need?
